Gaboon Adder (Bitis gabonica) from Zululand.

A large, robust adder that averages 90 – 120 cm in Southern Africa but gets much larger elsewhere in Africa. This beautifully-coloured snake occurs from Mtunzini northwards to Richards Bay, St. Lucia and Ndumo, then northwards into Mozambique, eastern Zimbabwe and elsewhere further north.
Though mainly active at night, it is fond of basking on the fringes of forests. It is surprisingly placid and may emit a series of long, drawn-out hisses with the forepart of the body elevated if threatened. Bites are virtually unheard of in South Africa but workers on tea plantations in Zimbabwe do occasionally get bitten.
Like the Puff Adder, this snake has a potent predominantly cytotoxic venom, but can inject much larger quantities in a single bite. Symptoms may include shock, severe pain, swelling, blistering and necrosis. Polyvalent antivenom is effective against the venom of this snake.

The Gaboon Adder is threatened by habitat destruction and is listed as ‘Near Threatened’ in the latest Atlas and Red List of the Reptiles of South Africa.

The harmless Green Water Snake (Philothamnus hoplo

The harmless Green Water Snake (Philothamnus hoplogaster) is usually a plain green colour with a white to yellowish belly, a rounded head with a bit of soft yellow around the snout and differs from the Natal Green Snakes and Spotted Bush Snake in that it does not have keeled ventral scales.

Some individuals, as illustrated in this photographs may have some dark spots dorsally in the neck region. This specimen is from northern Mozambique.

The Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica), also known as the M'Fezi, occurs from the KZN south coast northwards into Swaziland, Mozambique, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, Northwest and further northward into Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia.

It is locally abundant, an active hunter and often ends up in homes where people are bitten while asleep. This is not a case where the snake is accidentally rolled over onto while people are asleep or seeking heat - it is hunting for food and mistaking people for a meal. There are many case histories with lots of babies also being bitten in the face, chest or on the arms or hands and this happens both where people sleep on the floor and in luxury game lodges.

The venom of this snake is potently cytotoxic causing pain, swelling and tissue damage that, in many cases, requires extensive surgery afterwards.
Fatalities in adults are rare as the venom is slow in acting and does not have dramatic neurotoxic effects.

When required, large quantities of polyvalent antivenom needs to be administered sooner rather than later, as after about six hours the antivenom seems to have limited effect.

Ensure that your doors seal well, that they do not have gaps under them and do not sleep with sliding doors open. In high risk areas people are advised to sleep under mosquito nets.

Sundevall's Garter Snake (Elapsoidea sundevallii sundevallii).

The Sundevall's garter snake is secretive and seldom encountered. Juveniles have 19 – 34 pinkish or orange-yellow bands on the body and tail that fade with age. Adults are usually plain blackish brown or dark brown with a lighter belly while some may still have traces of banding.
It is a fossorial snake that may emerge at night from an underground shelter or deserted termite mounds. These snakes are quite placid and rarely bite. They feed on snakes, lizards and their eggs and frogs, especially rain frogs. Small rodents are also taken.
Little is known about their venom and bites have caused nausea, vomiting, pain and swelling.

Back by popular demand, we'll be running a weekday course on the 20th of November at @cradlemoongamelodge

Join us for a day of snake education! And learn all about snakes from author and herpetologist Johan Marais.
The course starts at 09:30am sharp with a Snake Awareness, Scorpion Awareness, Spider Awareness and First Aid for Snakebite/Scorpion sting lecture that lasts around 3 hours.

It includes scorpion awareness, snake awareness, biology and behavior, myths, identification, basic first aid for snakebite, scorpion sting and spider bite, as well as medical treatment of snakebite and is followed by a written test.

Delegates then go on to complete a practical snake handling session, where we teach them the safest protocols for safe snake removal. Snakes used for the handling session vary but we usually make use of the following species: Puff Adder, Snouted Cobra, Cape Cobra, Rinkhals.
