Marbled tree Snake (Dipsadoboa aulica) Mildly veno

Marbled tree Snake (Dipsadoboa aulica) Mildly venomous although not dangerous to people.
An attractive nocturnal snake that shelters in tree hollows, under loose bark and particularly around thatch roofs where it hunts geckos.
When threatened it will coil loosely into a striking position with its head flattened and raised off the ground striking viciously.

Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) from the KZN

Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) from the KZN South Coast. A highly venomous snake that is largely restricted to thick coastal bush close to the sea in KZN and rarely accounts for bites. Such bites usually result in some swelling. It is not near as potent a venom as that of the Black Mamba but known to be potentially fatal. Harmless green snakes of the genus Philothamnus are often mistaken for the Green Mamba - note the large smile, coffin-shaped head if viewed from above and the odd scattered yellow scale. The eyes of the Green Mamba are dark green to green-brown or medium brown to greenish brown in juveniles. Harmless green snakes of the genus may have yellow to orange-yellow eyes, quite different to that of the Green Mamba.

Herald Snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia) from the

Herald Snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia) from the Caprivi, Namibia. In South Africa this snake often has a reddish upper lip and is called a Red-lipped Snake (Rooilippie) but over much of their range they do not have a red lip. In Kenya this snake is called a White-lipped snake.

This snake is common in suburban gardens where it feeds on toads. Its venom is mild and has virtually no effect on humans and pets.

The first Western Cape public meeting of the ASI H

The first Western Cape public meeting of the ASI Herpetological Association
will take place on the 16th of April 2021 in Milnerton.
Johan Marais will be talking on Herping with Giants.

Over the past 20 years, Johan has been rather fortunate to be in the field with the likes of the late Don Broadley, the late Bill Branch, the late John Visser, Marius Burger, Graham Alexander, Paul Moler, Randy Babb, Aaron Bauer, Gordon Setaro and Colin Tilbury, to mention but a few. These were trips to Madagascar, Mexico, Florida, Arizona, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi and Uganda. While many trips lasted a week or so, more were as long as six weeks. Join Johan for an interesting talk on these extraordinary trips.

Common Egg-eater (Dasypeltis scabra) from Poffadder in the Northern Cape, eating a bird egg. These snakes are harmless to humans, but like to put up an impressive defensive display when threatened. They coil and uncoil rubbing their heavily keeled scales together, which makes a sound similar to hissing.
