A young Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) from Hoedspruit, Limpopo. In southern Africa, Black Mambas typically hatch around February and measure between 40–60 cm at birth. Like all venomous snakes, they are highly venomous from the moment they hatch, although their venom yield is far lower than that of an adult.

A large banded Snouted Cobra (Naja annulifera). Banded individuals are not that common and most of them are males.
This snake use to be called the Egyptian Cobra as it was a subspecies of the Egyptian Cobra (Naja haje annulifera) but was elevated to full species by Don Broadley in 1995 and the common name was changed to Snouted Cobra.
It is one of the largest cobras in Southern Africa, reaching a length of around 2,5 m. Though highly venomous it seldom accounts for bites on humans, but is often removed from fowl runs.

Fangs of a Twig or Vine Snake (Thelotornis capensi

Fangs of a Twig or Vine Snake (Thelotornis capensis capensis) from Hluhluwe, KZN. Note how far back in the mouth the fangs are situated. This is a highly venomous snake but rarely bites. There is no antivenom for a bite from a Vine Snake and no fatal bites recorded in South Africa. A few fatalities elsewhere have been documented. Despite the fangs being far back in the mouth, the Vine Snake can open its mouth wide and bite easily.
