Rhino-horned Viper (Bitis nasicornis)

The Rhino-horned Viper is widespread over much of the tropical forests of the equators. It is a heavy-bodied snake that relies on its excellent camouflage and is reluctant to move.

This snake is an ambush hunter that will coil up into a striking position and await its prey. It is fond of marshy areas and is often seen swimming and is equally comfortable at climbing. They are nocturnal, usually hiding in leaf litter during the day.

The Rhino-horned viper’s venom is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, blistering and in many cases severe tissue damage. Polyvalent antivenom is effective and should be administered.

Gaboon Adder (Bitis gabonica)

A large, robust adder that averages 1 meter, but may reach 1.75 m. This beautifully-coloured snake occurs in savanna, coastal and montane forest.

Though mainly active at night, it is fond of basking on the fringes of forests. It is surprisingly placid and may emit a series of long, drawn-out hisses with the forepart of the body elevated if threatened.

Like the Puff Adder, this snake has a potent predominantly cytotoxic venom. Symptoms may include shock, severe pain, swelling, blistering and necrosis. Polyvalent antivenom is effective against the venom of this snake.

Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica)

The Mozambique Spitting Cobra occurs on the eastern side of South Africa, most of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, north-eastern Botswana, northern Namibia and further north in Africa. Its diet consists largely of frogs, small mammals, birds and snakes, including the Puff Adder. It is active on overcast days, but more active at night, often ending up in houses where people are bitten while asleep.

This snake accounts for the majority of serious snakebite cases in southern Africa, but fatalities are rare. It also spits its venom and does not always spread a hood when doing so. The venom is potently cytotoxic causing pain, swelling, blisters and in many cases severe tissue damage. Antivenom is effective if administered early and in large dosages.

Eastern Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps)

The Green Mamba is a bright green snake that inhabits coastal forests and dense montane forests. It can also be found in plantations, including mango orchards and areas with certain nut-bearing trees. Due to its appearance, it is often mistaken for harmless green snakes of the genus Philothamnus or the Green Boomslang.

This species spends most of its life among dense vegetation, where it actively hunts during the day, feeding on tree-dwelling mammals and birds. Although primarily arboreal, it may occasionally descend to the ground to bask or move between trees. Unfortunately, Green Mambas are sometimes found as roadkill.

The Green Mamba possesses potent neurotoxic venom, which can also cause local swelling. Although effective antivenom is available, bites are relatively uncommon due to the snake’s shy and elusive nature. Dogs are particularly vulnerable, as they may be bitten when attempting to attack or kill these snakes, often with fatal consequences.

A young African Rock Python (Python sebae) photographed at Watamu Snake Farm, Kenya. Other than occurring in different regions, the African Rock Python can be distinguished from the Southern African Python (Python natalensis) in that the scales on the head of the African Rock Python are large and organised as opposed to the small scattered scales on the head of the Southern African Python.

We are the leading training provider of Snake Awareness, First Aid for Snakebite, and Venomous Snake Handling courses in Africa, as well as the largest distributor of quality snake handling equipment on the continent.
