The photograph of a Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) with a light-coloured mouth resulted in several comments, some of them questioning the identity of the snake saying that it is a cobra and others accusing me of lying. It is actually not a rare occurrence and over the past 45 years I have seen a few Black Mambas with light mouths as well as Green Mambas (Dendroaspis angusticeps) with blackish mouths. Herewith a full-body photograph of the Black Mamba in question, taken 15 years ago in Limpopo. Questions and constructive comments are welcomed while those posting offensive comments will be removed from this page.

On the Kokerboom Biological Research Station in Namaqualand and like most of the country we have had far more rain than normal. Roads are washed away and large dams have formed in arid areas. The Gaboon Adder (Bitis gabonica) from northern KwaZulu-Natal is a large, heavily built snake, perfectly camouflaged among coastal leaf litter. It can remain completely motionless for days, waiting patiently for small mammals or birds to come within striking distance. They are highly venomous, but bites are rare.
