Southern Africa is considered the region south of the Kunene and Zambezi Rivers and is made up of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho.
The huge variety of habitats, from deserts in the west to moist montane forests in the east and Mediterranean-like Fynbos in the south, has allowed snake species to radiate into multiple niches.
This habitat diversity, coupled with varied rain patterns and elevation differences across the region has created some of the richest snake diversity in Africa with 177 species currently listed for the subregion
