Kunene Coral Snake (Aspidelaps lubricus cowlesi) from northern Namibia. This highly venomous elapid has recently been responsible for several fatalities, particularly in children. It is a relatively large coral snake, reaching lengths of up to 75 cm. Like other African coral snakes, it displays a defensive posture by raising its head, forming a narrow hood, hissing, and lunging forward.

Rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) near Dullstroom,

Rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga. Highly venomous. The Rinkhals is a defensive snake that readily stands its ground, spreading an impressive hood when threatened. If the danger persists, it may lunge forward and accurately spray venom at the attacker. Should this fail, it often resorts to playing dead—rolling onto its back with its mouth open. Once the threat has passed, it quickly rights itself and retreats into thick grass or a nearby hole.
