Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) in full strike. Highly venomous.

The Puff Adder is widespread over much of southern Africa and further north into Africa. It is a heavy-bodied snake that relies on its excellent camouflage and is reluctant to move. Much of its life is spent in camouflage mode and recent research has shown that when hiding, the Puff Adder will not hiss or strike when approached, as this would give away its presence.

It is an ambush hunter that will coil up into a striking position and await its prey. This can last several days or even weeks. Toads are lured closer with flicking of the tongue. Puff Adder venom is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, blistering and in many cases severe tissue damage. Polyvalent antivenom is effective.

We’re on the lookout for affordable new venues in Joburg & Pretoria!

Every month, we host our popular Snake Awareness, First Aid for Snakebite, and Venomous Snake Handling courses — and we’re looking for a few new affordable spots to run them!

Here’s what we need:
• Lecture room: Space for 60 - 80 delegates.
• Catering facilities: Onsite kitchen (or café) for tea, coffee, muffins, and light lunch prep.
• Practical area: A shaded lawn, roughly the size of a tennis court, for the hands-on snake handling session.

We’re not looking for fancy or expensive venues — places like sports clubs, school halls, or scout halls would be perfect, as long as there’s safe parking available.

We’re specifically looking in these areas:
• Cradle of Humankind
• Fourways
• East Rand
• Centurion
• Pretoria East

The Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) occurs a

The Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) occurs along coastal KwaZulu-Natal from southern KwaZulu-Natal northwards and into Mozambique, extending further northwards.
Despite popular belief, this venomous snake is not found in eSwatini, the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, or Northwest Province. In South Africa, they inhabit thick coastal forest quite close to the sea (within 50 km), requires a sub-tropical environment with very high humidity and will certainly not survive in bushveld.
It is a highly venomous snake that rarely bites and fatalities are extremely rare. Unlike Black Mamba venom, the venom of this snake rarely results in rapid progressive weakness with severe difficulty in breathing and victims often have a fair amount of swelling. On a LD50 test (on laboratory mice) the venom of the Green Mamba is about a tenth the strength of that of the Black Mamba.

A young Marbled Tree Snake (Dipsadoboa aulica). A mildly venomous nocturnal snake that occurs from coastal northern KwaZulu-Natal into Mozambique, Swaziland Mpumalanga, Limpopo and elsewhere further north. It feeds on lizards, especially geckos, frogs (including toads) and small rodents.
