Rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) - Highly venomous.

The Rinkhals is endemic to southern Africa and is found only in South Africa, eSwatini and Lesotho. The population in the Zimbabwe Eastern Highlands is now considered a new species – Nyanga Rinkhals (Hemachatus nyangensis). Though it resembles a cobra (spreads a hood), the Rinkhals is not a true cobra and gives birth to live young. It is essentially a grassland inhabitant but is also found in fynbos in the Western Cape. It is fond of wetlands where it feeds on frogs.

When threatened it is quick to disappear down a hole, but if cornered it will stand its ground, form a hood and spit. The Rinkhals is also quick to play dead with the body turned upside down and the mouth hanging open. The venom of this snake is largely cytotoxic causing pain, swelling and potentially tissue damage. Bites are extremely rare and fatalities virtually unheard of. Polyvalent antivenom is effective.

Tubing a Black Mamba. Using an acrylic tube to res

Tubing a Black Mamba. Using an acrylic tube to restrain a venomous snake requires skill and patience but is far safer than necking (gripping a venomous snake behind the head). While necking is often necessary, especially when removing a problem Black Mamba, it does carry risks and should be avoided at all costs. Sadly there is an obsession, especially with inexperienced handlers, to neck venomous snakes for photos to be posted on social media. The African Snakebite Institute includes both necking and tubing on our Advanced Snake Handling course (Level 3). It is an introduction to advanced snake handling and will require a great deal of hands-on experience to hone your skills. Please note that if you do not have a lot of experience working with venomous snakes, you cannot be trained to work with highly venomous snakes like Black Mambas in a quick 20 minute session after your first day of training. Dealing with a large wild Black Mamba or Cape Cobra on a hot day requires a great deal of experience.

Black File Snake (Gracililima nyassae) - Harmless

Black File Snake (Gracililima nyassae) - Harmless

A small file snake that averages 50 cm, with a maximum length of 65 cm. The Black File Snake is relatively rare but may be caught in traps on reptile surveys or found crossing roads at night. It is nocturnal and hunts for prey such as lizards and frogs. When confronted it moves in jerky movements and will hide its head under its coils. It will also emit a foul-smelling liquid if handled.

Unlike the Common File Snake, this snake lacks the light dorsal stripe but has the characteristic triangular body. It is usually uniform purple-brown to blackish above with mauve to pink skin between the scales. The belly is dark olive to black or yellowish-white.

Common Slug-eater (Duberria lutrix) - Harmless

A small snake that averages 30 – 35 cm. It feeds exclusively on snails and slugs and locates them by following the slime trail. The Common Slug-eater favours damp localities in the south-eastern half of southern Africa.

During the day it seeks shelter under rocks, logs and grass tufts and emerges in the evening to hunt. It is reluctant to bite and if threatened will defecate and secrete a foul-smelling substance simultaneously. It also has the peculiar habit of rolling up into a tight spiral with the head concealed, like a roll of tobacco, hence the Afrikaans name.

This small slow-moving snake is not venomous and poses no threat to humans.

Rhino-horned Viper (Bitis nasicornis)

The Rhino-horned Viper is widespread over much of the tropical forests of the equators. It is a heavy-bodied snake that relies on its excellent camouflage and is reluctant to move.

This snake is an ambush hunter that will coil up into a striking position and await its prey. It is fond of marshy areas and is often seen swimming and is equally comfortable at climbing. They are nocturnal, usually hiding in leaf litter during the day.

The Rhino-horned viper’s venom is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, blistering and in many cases severe tissue damage. Polyvalent antivenom is effective and should be administered.
