A highly venomous Black Spitting Cobra (Naja nigri

A highly venomous Black Spitting Cobra (Naja nigricincta woodi) from Namaqualand. These large, striking cobras are typically shy and will quickly retreat into rock crevices or hollow trees when disturbed. However, if cornered or threatened, they raise an impressive hood and can accurately spray venom toward the eyes. Venom in the eyes causes intense pain and should be rinsed immediately with copious amounts of water. It is advisable the victim visits a clinic for further treatment.

Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) - Colour.

The Black Mamba varies in colour, typically ranging from olive green and dark olive to greyish-brown, light grey, or gunmetal grey. Some individuals display darker mottling that can form faint, slanted bars along the sides, and the tail is usually darker than the rest of the body. Older snakes, or those preparing to shed, often appear much darker, and in certain regions, naturally darker individuals are more common.Juveniles are generally lighter, most often light to medium grey with a pale belly and darker tail.

The inside of the mouth is usually a deep, inky black—though individuals with lighter-coloured mouths do occur. When threatened, the Black Mamba is quick to pull back into a striking position. It may form a narrow hood and open its mouth wide, revealing the characteristic black interior as a clear warning display.

A large Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) from D

A large Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. This is Africa’s longest venomous snake, with recorded lengths of up to 4.5 metres, although individuals over 3.8 metres are rare. Black Mambas are typically nervous and will try to escape if given the opportunity. However, if cornered or threatened, they become highly defensive—raising the front of the body off the ground, spreading a narrow hood, and opening the mouth to reveal the distinctive inky-black lining. In this state, they may strike rapidly and repeatedly until the perceived threat retreats.
